What would a wedding be like without flowers? Whether you are planning a summer or winter wedding, an indoor or outdoor venue, flowers are always a must to bring beauty to a wedding. They can transform a simple room into a magical and romantic space. I always like to tell my clients that deep down a wedding is a party, just like any other celebration, but a wedding is different as we love to decorate and celebrate with the floral element included. One cannot have a wedding without flowers!
It is very easy to get overwhelmed with all the decisions concerning the floral element of your wedding: which type of flowers, where to put them, which colour scheme, how to pick the perfect bouquet that fits my personality and the dress… but not to worry, we are here to help you let your inspiration bloom and create the perfect ambiance for your wedding.
Bridal Bouquets
The bridal bouquet is one of the most important accessories on your wedding day, it will be featured in many of your pictures during your nuptials and a visual element throughout the day, so it has to fit perfectly with the beauty of your dress and your surroundings. Just like the perfect handbag sets the outfit to perfection, so does the bouquet create the perfect touch to your look on the day. There are many combinations you can consider; all you need is a floral preference and a little creativeness.
Fresh flowers always add that extra touch, which is always stunning, vivacious and fragrant. The style you pick, posy or shower style, is very important as a bouquet picked correct will create the right effect, but if not can ruin the look altogether. One very important thing to note when picking your bouquet with your florist is to show him/her an image of your wedding dress as these two go hand in hand for the right results.
Now you have your solid base, it’s time to pick your choice of flowers. Remember that not all flowers are in bloom all year round and the temperature of the month you are getting married in is also important to note since some flowers open faster in the heat and can wilt easily. So having a favourite flower does not always mean that it can be the flower of choice on your wedding day. However, a good florist can help you by offering similar style flowers that can fit nicely with the weather and the look you are after.
One can also add a touch of colour to the bouquet, unless you want the classic white wedding décor. You can also decide to add some jewels, ribbon and texture to make it more personal and still match your theme.
Let’s touch base on your bridesmaid’s bouquets as there are so many options one can choose from. Often, we see the bridesmaids with the same style and choice of floral bouquet as the bride but a little smaller in size. Alternatively, the bride’s bouquet apart from being bigger in size will also be distinctly different in colour scheme. A trend which popped up in the past few years is that the bridesmaid bouquets are not significantly smaller in size but similar in size to the brides creating a more impressive effect.
Flowers for your ceremony
For the ceremony, it is really important to have the floral decorations in-keeping with the area being used. In the case of a church wedding, you will have to take in consideration the style of the church itself, the design of the ceiling, the stained-glass windows if any, the brilliance, the pews…. If the church is simple with very little illumination, you can add coloured flowers and candles incorporated to add that romantic touch and that extra bit of lighting. If it is a more extravagant church, you should keep it simple, so the flowers don’t overpower the scene. Remember the expression ‘bigger is better’ does not always apply when using flowers to decorate your wedding.
Your civil ceremony floral décor will differ depending on three major factors namely: whether you choose an indoor venue and in an outdoor venue, the lighting provided be it natural or induced, and also the décor around the area being picked to host the ceremony. With an outdoor venue you can use the natural surroundings as the natural backdrop and use minimal floral decorations to centre point the attention on you during the ceremony not everything else in the surrounding area. A floral arch usually does the trick for this, or a flower aisle leading to the standing point of the couple. With an indoor setting there would be more need of floral décor unless the venue picked is very ornate, then care must be taken to choose wisely and correctly as overpowering a room with floral decorations can have an adverse effect.
Adding a touch of floral to your wedding cake
The cutting of the cake is a big part of your wedding and all eyes will be on you and your delicious cake. There are many ways to decorate a wedding cake, but it has been the trend for the past years to use fresh flowers as they create a romantic charm to the cake and tie in all the floral decorations together. This is something to keep in mind especially when your wedding is being held in a garden, fresh flowers just add that magical touch to make it all fit in nicely.
Reception floral ideas
When it comes to the reception, your guests will spend a long time eating their dinner and obviously we want them to feel comfortable and enjoy their meal as much as they enjoy their table setting. This is why a table centrepiece is essential, and flowers are always a perfect touch, not only visually but the aroma they produce is divine. Do not hesitate to incorporate decorative accessories to add your personality as a couple.
It is important to note that when at table your guests want to communicate with the people sitting around the whole table, so when picking your floral designs do keep this in mind as blocking them totally from having any conversation with the people in front of them can result in a boring dinner – only speaking to the person on the right or the left-hand side of where they are sitting. Taller vases can do this trick perfectly or lovely posy arrangements flat on the table also work. Adding some candles to the dinner table decorations are a perfect touch to help transition from the day to the night effect smoothly creating a romantic feel at the same time once the sun sets.
